FEB 1st, SUNDAY  2015 ~ The BOOM BOOMS ~
http://theboombooms.com
Some of the tightest, smoothest, sexiest soul and funk produced in the city right now comes courtesy of six guys who all grew up within a few blocks of each other on Vancouver’s East Side.”
The “Boom Boom Block Party” became a summer highlight for East Vancouver residents for four years and raised over $20,000 for organizations such as Environmental Youth Alliance (EYA); Contributing to Lives of Inner City Youth (CLICK); and The Music Tree, a not-for-profit foundation that is dedicated to raising awareness of ecological community projects through fundraising concerts and events. Co-founded by Aaron Ross and supported by The Boom Booms, The Music Tree is committed to “greening” the planet by inspiring people to get involved in community building and self-sustainability.

The Boom Booms are an Indie Soul band from Vancouver, BC. The group consists of brothers Aaron Ross (lead vocals) and Sean Ross (keys), Tom Van Deursen (guitar), Geordie Hart (bass), Richard Brinkman (drums), and Theo Vincent (percussion, drums).

The Boom Booms love and live for the road. They’ve busked across Europe, performed in the Brazilian Amazon and Rio’s famous ‘Casa Rosa’, toured in a Scamper RV the 12,000 km roundtrip from Vancouver to Panama and circumnavigated the United States twice in their yellow School Bus.
“Watch for these guys, because, as the good people of Brazil will happily confirm, they are on to something special.”
—Mike Usinger, The Georgia Straight

“The Boom Booms epitomize a young band connecting with an audience”
—Avigdor Schulman, Big Time Out

“organic groovemeisters that make you get up, melodies that wrap around your bones, it’s all pumping with joy. They beam it out.”
—Bruce Greenwood, Actor

“Aaron’s music combines the raw emotional intensity of Ben Harper and the cultural diversity of Manu Chao, with a sound that harkens back to old time folk and soul.”
—CBC Radio 3

*FEB 14th, SAT ~ MINDIL BEACH ~ http://www.mindilbeach.com/  For a band with a complex list of influences, Mindil Beach is simply named after a coastline in Darwin, Australia. Equal parts soul, adrenaline, and swagger, they are redefining the limits of rock & roll. Mindil Beach have been touring their latest single, Love Like Mine, around western Canada, and will be heading back across the country in April in support of a new EP. This summer, the band participated in the Fox Seeds Competition, a battle of the bands hosted by Vancouver radio station 99.3 The Fox. After earning a spot in top 3, they were given the opportunity to play the Commodore Ballroom with red-hot Canadian duo, USS.
Over the past 6 years, they’ve opened for acts ranging from Nazareth to The Original Wailers to Sam Roberts. And since the release of their sophomore record, It Might Take Long (2013), Mindil Beach have been persistently touring the Canadian bar, festival and school circuits. Local success of the album's lead single, Smoking Gun, served as a springboard for national exposure. To date, they’ve rocked crowds at festivals like Rifflandia and Squamish Valley Music Festival, and have appeared on CTV's Canada AM and Global TV. But no matter the size of the venue, every Mindil Beach shows feels like you’re dancing in your living room.
"They've proven time and again with their up-tempo, energetic show that they would lend themselves well to any number of stages.”
Dave Sawchuk - Alternative Rock Selector

*FEB 21st, SAT ~ POPPA DAWG ~ http://www.poppadawg.com/
Hailing from the 'Left Coast' of Canada, Rick ‘Poppa Dawg’ Halisheff and his band present the blues with a unique, tongue-in-cheek view and a deep and respectful appreciation of the music. The band's sound moves from the slinky grooves of New Orleans to the down and dirty rawness of Chicago and all points in-between! Gritty and dynamic, they take the music from rushing peaks to hushing lows and then Poppa Dawg steps back from the mic to spread the news!
In 2013, the band were semi-finalists at the International Blues Challenge
in Memphis and won over an entire new audience with their original tunes,
re-affirming their faith in the music that means so much to them. The trip
opened new doors and new opportunities including being recommended by
the Powder Blues’ own Tom Lavin for a slot at the 2013 Calgary International Blues Festival.
With 4 albums now released, the latest CD, ‘What You Got’, features the
great Canadian blues guitarist JW Jones on the track ‘Dub Step’ as well as
a variety of original tunes including one penned by friend Brandon ‘Yukon
Slim’ Isaak. The disc runs from gritty and soulful to deep and nasty and
features the use of Poppa Dawg‘s trademark talkbox. It is still receiving
airplay around the world as well as being featured on Saturday Night Blues
on CBC, Galaxie and thorughout the US and Europe.

Power, style, tone, feel, and ENERGY are the ingredients that make
Poppa Dawg a force to be reckoned with.
- JW-Jones
What a great surprise to discover Poppa Dawg at the Calgary Blues
Festival. Being a somewhat over-stimulated guy from Toronto, I didn't
think you could find this much solid power west of the Big Smoke. How
nice to be proved wrong! As the old jazzers used to say, solid, man!
- Richard Flohill
Halisheff's voice is strong, with a whiskey-soaked edge, and as a
songwriter, he tackles interesting subjects with a humorous,
tongue-in-cheek style, while his guitar work is focused and to-the-point.

Extra! Extra! Read all about it!
The finest Rock n' Soul band in all the land.
It’s not hard to tell once Paperboy and the Messengers get started that this band of gentlemen means business. Touring around Western Canada for the last three years has seen the band share bills with the likes of The New Pornographers, Death Cab for Cutie, Local Natives, Bend Sinister and The Zolas, to name a few. JULY 4th, SAT ~ PAPPA DAWG BLUES BAND ~
http://www.poppadawg.com/
My Bud is back to Shuffle Blues you into the night!

Power, style, tone, feel, and ENERGY are the ingredients that

*JULY 17th, FRI ~ BOTTOM SHELF BOURBON BAND ~
http://www.thebottomshelfbourbontrio.com/
The Bottom Shelf Bourbon Trio has taken a circuitous route to reach the current point in their ongoing creative exploration. Experimenting with a variety of musical genres, from country, bluegrass, swing and drawing on a punk/metal aesthetic developed in the underground music scene to make energetic, relevant, contemporary music.  The band’s first EP is a mix of original songs, traditional tunes, barnburners, and ballads. "No Time to Quit" clearly illustrates the groups‟ investment in the musical traditions of “Americana” but infuses them with a contemporary edge.
Songwriters and multi-instrumentalists Steve Nelson (guitar, mandolin, harmonica, vocals) and Steven Huston (upright bass, guitar, vocals) connected via craigslist. Nelson, having just arrived in Vancouver, was seeking like-minded musicians to explore old-time music with and found Steven who was exploring the bluegrass and folk roots of his rural Nova Scotian upbringing. The two finally met Chris Dawson-Murphy (banjo, guitar, vocals) hearing him play a bluegrass set in East Van and instantly knew he was the third member they had been looking for – then harassed him until he agreed to join. Chris, a diverse and talented multi-instrumentalist, was immersed in blues and old-time music in the cradle of American roots music: the Mississippi River Delta in Baton Rouge and New Orleans, Louisiana. Dawson-Murphy solidified the trio and took it into new territory.

Montreals Psychadelic Jazz Rock band, “Saturn Alien”
Saturn Alien Is a musical adventure forged through friendship & tranquility and keeping it fresh without dismissing musical history. All of the members firmly believe that they are characters in Thelonius Monk's dreams of debauchery and Jimi Hendrix. There is evidence everywhere.
In the countless futures that Thelonious Monk manifested, Saturn Alien is a constant. A sinuous combination of roman debauchery and jazzfunk spank has evolved a generation of mutant sounds. This aberrant strain is a product of intense collaboration between:
Members: ~ Louis Butterfield: Lead Vocals ~ Kieran Jarvis: Drums ~ Mike Baelde: Guitar ~ Kevin Geloso: Bass ~ Andy Burns: Keys

*AUG 23rd, SUN ~WENDELL FERGUSON~ http://www.wendellferguson.com/
Wendell Ferguson has garnered quite a following, seemingly as much for his great sense of humour as for his high-quality guitar playing. A quick glance at the cover of his latest CD (his fifth, I believe) tells the story better than words.
Humour aside, Wendell has been a busy guy recording this CD. Besides his acoustic guitar he plays electric guitars, bass, tambourine, drums, shakers, congas, pop can lids, Martin hole (?), castanets, slinky (!), brushes, keyboards, and programming. In fact, the only other musician present is Marilyn Magyarosi who plays chimes on Save Your Fork and Happy-Go-Lucky.
Right from the opening flourish of Mayor of Loserville you are put on notice that this is going to be straight-ahead fingerstyle guitar, with a "band" of Wendells to add backup. If you are a fan of fingerstyle these tunes will sound instantly familiar, so well has Mr. Ferguson imbibed that style. This country-flavoured tune is a real jolt of caffeine to get you in the mood.

AUG 28th & 29th, FRI & SAT ~MUD BAY BLUES BAND~
http://mudbayblues.com/wp/
For 34 years (and counting) the Mud Bay Blues Band has been electrifying audiences with their eclectic and original style of Rhythm and Blues. They have survived more than their share of trials and tribulations along the way, living up to their well-earned reputation as “The Band That Won’t Go Away”–much to the delight of their legions of devoted fans.

This ain’t your average blues band.

Founded in the badlands of South Surrey in 1978 by lead singer / blues harp master Mud Bay Slim (a.k.a. Harold Arnold), the band’s hard-edged, high-voltage, in-your-face  approach immediately distinguished them from their mellower counterparts in the Vancouver R&B scene. Throughout the years they have honed a distinctive style, playing the blues their way: uncompromisingly unconventionally, with no apologies for liberties taken.

A discerning listen to their 2007 album, “Death, Taxes and the Mud Bay Blues Band (Three Things That Won‘t Go Away)” reveals the depth and breadth of the influences informing their original compositions: classic Chicago blues, country, zydeco, barrel-house boogie … and in 2009 their follow-up album, “Mudified” continued this trend with widely disparate elements finding common ground inside the songs, all interpreted and incorporated the Mud Bay way.

*SEPT 20th, SUN ~ TOM SAVAGE ~ http://www.tomsavage.ca/
The wrong side of town, endless roads traveled, longing for home, and the hope for love. These are the themes that find their way into much of Tom Savage’s songwriting.

Tom has devoted the past twenty years to the creation of songs. Waiting for them to come to him or dragging them out of the ether kicking and screaming. Letting them linger on the edges of his psyche until they are just right, or scribbling them down on the page with reckless abandon. Ten minutes from the seed of an idea to a finished product. Every song is different and is meant to serve a purpose and tell a story.

A prolific writer, Tom has released 6 recordings of original music and penned hundreds of songs. In 2012, he challenged himself to write, record, and post online, a song for every week of the year. Dubbed the Song-A-Week Challenge, the project allowed people a unique glimpse into the songwriting process and left Savage with a new, workmanlike approach to songwriting.

He is currently in the process of recording his seventh album, as well as working on songs with his new band, the country-tinged Foley Mountain Playboys.

*SEPT 23rd, WED ~ ANN VRIEND & JORY KINJO ~ http://www.annvriend.com/  Double bill with Jory Kinjo, front man and bassist of the Mocking Shadows.  We'll be doing our singer-songwriter non-band "shut up and listen" type of stuff :)
Edmonton-based Ann Vriend (pronounced “Vreend”) was born in Vancouver, BC.  When her parents discovered their 3-year-old could play nursery songs on a Fisher Price xylophone, they encouraged her musical development by enrolling her in violin lessons.  At age nine, when Vriend sought to accompany herself as a songwriter, she took piano lessons from an elderly woman down the street who charged $5 per visit.  In high school, in order to be able to do submit her home-made recordings for a school project, Vriend was coerced into performing 3 of her compositions at the school talent show.  Accolades from her fellow students translated into projects with older students in bands, scholarships at music college, 1st place in a songwriting contest which paid for her debut album, interest from major record labels, and praise from critics and loyal fans around the world.
First, the voice: “Soulful, inspiring, brave and bluesy” (Rip It Up, Adelaide) with a “vocal range from vulnerable delicacy to blasts of soulful power” (Halifax Chronicle) Vriend's vocal sound has been described as an enchanting cross between the girly timbre of Dolly Parton and the blues-filled prowess of Aretha Franklin-- and as “almost confronting in its candour” by The Sydney Morning Herald.

*SEPT 26th, SAT ~ POPPA DAWG ~  http://www.poppadawg.com/
My Bud is back to Shuffle Blues you into the night!

Power, style, tone, feel, and ENERGY are the ingredients that
Poppa Dawg a force to be reckoned with.

Call it what you want, we call it a rocking Ska party. Straight out of downtown Montreal, K-Man & the 45s have been bringing an edge to the Canadian ska scene for a few years now. In 2011 the boys brought you their first full length album entitled Got Me Movin' and released their first video and single The Red Guy Always Wins. Then they began playing non-stop. They have now toured most of the country going from one ocean to another, and word has been spreading quickly that when these guys hit the stage people tend to get wild. Is it the rockin vibe these people inject into their ska? Is it the volume and intensity for a ska show that gets them? Is it the sense of urgency they play with? Whatever it is, they tend to rock their ska so hard that people not yet familiar to ska are now getting into the wave.
Often heard at a K-Man & the 45s show: "man I didn't even know I liked ska, this rocks"-random rocker in your city

http://paulinekyllonen.com/   Pauline Kyllonen (pronounced kĕ-low-něn) is an independent, performing, singer/songwriter based out of the Okanagan, British Columbia, Canada. Her sound has been compared to artists such as Lucinda Williams, Blue Rodeo and Cowboy Junkies, to name a few.
Pauline also recently placed in the "Top 20" artists (Regional Finalist) in the CBC Searchlight Contest (Feb 2013).
She may hail from Canada, but her sound is right out of Nashville.  Suffice to say she's got the Folk/Americana/Country sound down pat and has the talent to make the most of it.

"Pauline's melancholy sounds bring Chris Isaak to mind, and they are the kind of tunes to listen to when sipping a cold beer or glass of white wine, most certainly on a balcony somewhere, alone, to immerse yourself in the images and emotions her songs conjure up." - DJW, Mr. Neil's Blog, New York City, New York (Apr 26, 2009)
"Think a cleaner, less fussy version of Lucinda Williams and you'll be on the right track."
