Dean Gordon-Smith - Vernon Morning Star
The veteran five-piece Vancouver blues rock group, Mud Bay Blues Band’s new album, Colebrook Road is a rough hewn gem of gritty hybrid music.
The band’s sound is blues based, but they take it in interesting directions. The longevity of the group’s nearly 40-year stretch of unabashed rocking gives their music confidence and humour. This elasticity allows them to play fast and loose within their blues roots and they work it to the limit. They’re a band that sounds like they like playing together and it gives the songs on Colebrook Road a raucous kind of joy.
Led by singer and harpist Mud Bay Slim (King of the Mud Bay Delta Blues), the Mud Bay Blues Band aren’t purists of any sort and Colebrook Road amplifies their ballsy aesthetic. The production (aided by Victor Guideron and Jamie Sitar) preserves the interplay and casual irreverence of the band.  It captures how they listen to each other, making the songs sound boisterous and relaxed.
There are several songwriters within the group but their styles differ just enough to add contrast. They know blues and rock vocabulary and also how to get weird with it.
That’s where the charm of the band emerges - you know that they’d be a hell of a party group!
The album gets more adventurous as it goes on. They write their lyrics on the tongue-in-cheek side of cliché and that’s part of the appeal of the music. Although the group brings on some guests, they serve the song – no showboating. The music has a naughty edge (Hellbent, Pins) that also reveals a well-oiled machine that suffers no wankers. Or maybe it kicks them in the butt.
By the time the title cut rolls in, the Mud Bay Blues Band grooves on in a uniquely unhinged way. Clearly, these crunchy West Coast blues rockers don’t let their tightness impede their inclinations to get down. It’s a new way to hear the blues, baby.

*MAY 22nd, WED ~ Mike Allen Quartet "Celebrating Sonny Greenwich"
Spare, elegant, melodic, soaring, fierce - Vancouver’s Mike Allen has arrived as the country’s top jazz saxophonist. (Ottawa Citizen)
The current edition of the MAQ includes longtime musical associates Miles Black-piano&guitar, Steve Holy-bass and Dave Robbins-drums. They have been frequenting stages in Vancouver and surrounding cities lately, rousing audiences with high-energy original music that has a spiritual element; conjuring the sound of John Coltrane’s classic quartet.
At their first international jazz festival appearance (Warsaw Jazz Jamboree, Poland-1988) the Mike Allen Quartet was joined on stage by members of Miles Davis’ band (Kenny Garrett and Eliane Elias) at Club Akwarium.

Allen’s tone is as pure as that of Joe Henderson. His aesthetic habits come straight out of a blue-chip tenor tradition: from Joe Lovano back to Coleman Hawkins and into his primary inspiration, John Coltrane. (Vancouver Sun)

An accomplished musician who has studied Coltrane in depth and forged a style that is fresh and vital. (Jazz Journal International)

Allen’s true strength is his ability to pace and phrase his solos in a way that draws a listener into the music. (Planet Jazz)

*MAY 23rd, THURS ~ GEORGIA FATS ~ Blues Rock The Georgia Fats are a new band made up of three members with long histories in Canadian Music.
Starting with Barry Taylor who was a founding member in 1978 of the Young Canadians along with Art Bergmann who's song "Hawaii" is a punk anthem in Canada to this day. Barry went on to many fantastic years on the road with the infamous Roots Roundup known as Canada's ultimate punky reggae party!

Before Newfoundland’s Boyd Norman was out of his teens he had already recorded on vinyl and 8-track, worked regularly as a studio musician for CBC television, and had equipment stolen while on tour; a good start to any musical career. Boyd is also the bassist and a founding member the Rakish Angles.

Award winning guitarist Joël Fafard's career started in1997 with Winnipeg's Scruj MacDuhk, Joël went on to release nine solo albums winning a WCMA for Instrumental Album of the year, Fafard was also nominated for a Juno while getting the chance tour from New Zealand to South Africa.
Together they have started a trio that in a very short time has become greater than the sum of it's parts. What started out as an afternoon jam turned into a fill in gig, which evolved into a demo recording that turned into a five song EP. No punch ins, no over dubs, just live off the floor the way it was done a long time ago. Joel Fafard, Boyd Norman and Barry Taylor have come together from three different genres and histories to create gritty, greasy, diesel soaked blues rock with a fat groove bio engineered to get people moving.

Joël Fafard is an award winning guitarist and Juno nominee and was once part of Scrüj MacDuhk. Barry Taylor is best known as the beat keeper for Roots Round Up and The Young Canadians and Boyd Norman has held down the bottom line for Ron Hynes, Barkin’ Kettle and the Rakish Angles.

*AUG 22nd, THURS ~ BRANDON SANTINI ~Killer Blues Harmoica & Band!
"Brandon Santini displays the harp ability of a Hummel, the soul of a Salgado, and the pizzazz of a Piazza."
There are many different opinions as to what the future of the blues harmonica will be. International touring vocalist and harmonica player Brandon Santini is undeniably a worthy player to keep an eye on as the latest surge of young blues artists leave their footprint in blues history. His name is worthy of conversations that include James Cotton, Kim Wilson, Dennis Gruenling, Charlie Musselwhite and other frontline harmonica players by combining his love and respect for traditional blues with a present, colorful style of playing that is often compared to James Cotton or Paul Butterfield. Raised in the Piedmont region of North Carolina, Santini purchased his first harmonica in 1997 at the age of fifteen when his mother took him to the local music store upon his request. He founded the Blues Music Award nominated band Delta Highway in 2003 and relocated to Memphis where he absorbed the sounds and culture of the Delta and North Mississippi Hill Country, honing his craft night after night, sweating it out in local Beale Street clubs just like Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, and B.B. King did decades before him. Now playing over 100 shows per year throughout the world, Santini has garnered five Blues Music Award nominations, festival headlining slots and even performing on stage with the likes of Buddy Guy and Gary Clark, Jr.

He began writing songs at 12, training classically throughout his teens and performing solo wherever he could, honing his craft and developing what would become the dynamite live show that he is renowned for today. At 18 he left school, turned professional and hit the road.
