NOV 22th, SAT ~ CROOKED BROTHERS ~
http://www.crookedbrothers.com/ The Crooked Brothers are home-brewed. They play homegrown, homemade music.
Both gritty and pretty at once - their take on folk, on blues, rock or anything they turn their hands to can't be said to be anything but their own.  Sometimes it's as simple as three sweet harmonies, or a single harmonica holding the whole room at attention, and sometimes things growl and shake and come smashing down with a filthy rhythm beneath it.  But it's all Crooked Brothers, to the last drop. Practically a Crooked Family Variety Act - their concerts see banjos, mandolins, guitars and more taking turns being juggled from brother to brother.  Each having their own style and touch, the arrangements seem limitless, and there's a refreshing sense that they will never write the same song twice.
The Crooked Brothers have performed to sold-out rooms at festivals overseas such as Brighton's Great Escape, and Willisau, Switzerland's Spring Bluegrass Festival. They have toured 10 countries, played in nearly every province and territory in Canada, and have released three full length albums, as well as an EP that comes available exclusively on limited-edition postcards.

*NOV 16th, SUN ~ COUGAR ANNIE ~ A Musical Theatre piece ~
http://www.katrinakadoski.com/
This is a piece about a legendary BC pioneer woman, developed through Intrepid Theatre's You Show and Uno Works programs, which was an Audience Pick at the Victoria Fringe Festival in 2012.
In 2007 I moved to an off-the-grid historical homestead /garden located 33 miles North of Tofino. It used to belong to a settler who became known as Cougar Annie. Shortly after arriving I began writing songs about her very interesting life. Here's a little more info on her:
 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cougar_Annie.
While most of my research happened during the three years I spent on her land. I have since  traveled around Vancouver Island, Manitoba, and Alberta. I have been conducting interviews with relatives, collecting photos, news clippings, and letters. After 5 years of writing and researching there is now a show called Cougar Annie Tales. It has been recently adapted as a solo theatre piece with support from the Other Guys, Kate Rubin, and Intrepid Theatre.

OCT 10th, FRI ~
PAPPA DAWG ~ http://www.poppadawg.com/
Hailing from the 'Left Coast' of Canada, Rick ‘Poppa Dawg’ Halisheff and his band present the blues with a unique, tongue-in-cheek view and a deep and respectful appreciation of the music. The band's sound moves from the slinky grooves of New Orleans to the down and dirty rawness of Chicago and all
points in-between! Gritty and dynamic, they take the music from rushing
peaks to hushing lows and then Poppa Dawg steps back from the mic to
spread the news!
In 2013, the band were semi-finalists at the International Blues Challenge
in Memphis and won over an entire new audience with their original tunes,
re-affirming their faith in the music that means so much to them. The trip
opened new doors and new opportunities including being recommended by
the Powder Blues’ own Tom Lavin for a slot at the 2013 Calgary International Blues Festival.
With 4 albums now released, the latest CD, ‘What You Got’, features the
great Canadian blues guitarist JW Jones on the track ‘Dub Step’ as well as
a variety of original tunes including one penned by friend Brandon ‘Yukon
Slim’ Isaak. The disc runs from gritty and soulful to deep and nasty and
features the use of Poppa Dawg‘s trademark talkbox. It is still receiving
airplay around the world as well as being featured on Saturday Night Blues
on CBC, Galaxie and thorughout the US and Europe.

Power, style, tone, feel, and ENERGY are the ingredients that make
Poppa Dawg a force to be reckoned with.
- JW-Jones
What a great surprise to discover Poppa Dawg at the Calgary Blues
Festival. Being a somewhat over-stimulated guy from Toronto, I didn't
think you could find this much solid power west of the Big Smoke. How
nice to be proved wrong! As the old jazzers used to say, solid, man!
- Richard Flohill
Halisheff's voice is strong, with a whiskey-soaked edge, and as a
songwriter, he tackles interesting subjects with a humorous,
tongue-in-cheek style, while his guitar work is focused and to-the-point.
- Craig Ruskey, MN Blues

This spring they added the vocal talents of Ernie "Oak Barrel" Ware to move the band in a distinctly bluesy direction. Covering a wide range of blues classics from John Lee Hooker and Muddy Waters to Jimmy Reed and Freddie King, Ware is growling one moment and smooth the next as the Atoms rhythm section drives the dance floor with funky shuffles and slick grooves. The Scattered Atoms Blues Band is Jon Treichel on guitar and vocals; Ernie Ware on lead vocals; Neil Brun on bass guitar; Graham How on trumpet and flugelhorn; and Richard Graham on drums.

An accomplished guitarist with a signature dusty voice, the real gold is in his lyrics. Cooks tales of dark beauty tempered with an offbeat sense of humour will captivate you.
Hard to pigeon-hole, his influences range from Hank Williams to J.J. Cale and everything in between. He cut his musical teeth in Alberta's rough and tumble honky-tonks and blues bars playing for cowboys, lumberjacks and bikers. In Cook's words " It grows a thick hide on you."

*AUG 24th, SUN ~SAM WEBER ~ http://webermusic.bandcamp.com/ Hailing from the open skies and minds of Victoria, BC, 20-year-old Canadian singer-songwriter and guitarist Sam Weber has gone from strength to strength with gigs and EP releases that have caught the imagination of listeners and media across the world. His ambitious, masterful debut full-length album Shadows in the Road is the culmination of years already spent intensely focused on gigging and recording.

Shadows in the Road is an album of intense contrasts, emotional entanglement, and mercurial, enthralling arrangements. Comparisons and contrasts are admittedly a glib exercise, but if you, dear reader, require them, then Weber channels the raw simplicity of early John Hiatt and Bruce Springsteen, while maintaining the gentle emotive grip of acts like Bon Iver and Bat for Lashes.

In 2012, at age 19, Weber was one of the youngest people to ever be covered in a major Guitar Player magazine feature. “Weber’s expansive blend of driving rock, dream pop and roots influences is a testament to fierce ambition,” said Guitar Player editor Anil Prasad. “The singer-songwriter and guitarist is already an expert tunesmith, brimming with addictive, adventurous and confident pieces. Infused with deep wit and wisdom, Weber’s output is truly impressive. His guitar work is also killer, full of nuance, soul and a truly unique voice. This is an artist built for the long-term. We’ll be hearing a lot more from Weber in the coming years, and more than likely, decades.”

*AUG 23rd, SAT ~MURDER MOUSE BLUES BAND~ http://www.murdermousebluesband.com/ Australian Blues and Roots Band! Murder Mouse Blues Band is a 3-piece blues and roots Australian outfit mixing blues with folk and celtic music and coming up with something stunningly original.
Started in 2008 by author and song writing juggernaut Adam Morris and one of Australias greatest solo multi-instrumentalists Jon Edwards it's not a surprise that the latest award winning album, The Thirst, The Hunger and The Horn, was featured in Rolling Stone Magazine and has taken the band to locales throughout the world. Insights into the band and their music from an IMA interview with band members says a lot about who they are and what they do:
"We do some serious genre bending, so our music has touches of Country, Irish Folk, early 50s Rock, some Jazz, Bernard Herman/Ennio Morricone type atmospherics, swamp, juke and pre-war nightclub blues. It's all over the shop, just the way it should be."
"We love playing festivals and love travelling to get there. Give us a month on the road travelling through a strange country and you've won us over. Anywhere there is good energy, live music and love in the air, we'll take it. If you don't have any, we can bring all three."

*AUG 2nd, SAT ~ T. NILE ~ http://tnile.com/  T. Nile is a synth-wielding sorceress of sound who has the uncanny ability to fuse traditional folk instrumentation and modern EDM technology via a unique brand of vibrant sass the likes of which you just don’t hear anymore. Impressive indeed, but not nearly as impressive as her new album Tingle & Spark.
Her first two records At My Table and Cabin Song caught the avid attention of music mavens and industry insiders alike, even though her full-blown creativity had yet to emerge. That’s because when T. Nile didn’t hear anyone else making the kind of music she was hearing in her own head, she hesitated until the audio overflow in her mind’s ear was too strong for even her to withstand.
Now the full unfettered force of T. Nile’s artistic vision is finally made manifest with senses-shattering strength on Tingle & Spark: an album of pretty intense songs which are both pretty and intense. Then again, what else would you expect given that its inspirational origins run the giddy gamut from Siouxie & The Banshees and Knife to Chromeo and Lauryn Hill? As for that analog Pink Floyd vibe…

“Working with synthesizers makes me feel a sense of unlimited musical possibility,” she says, comparing the capabilities to “a field of wildflowers versus a vase of flowers.” It’s a sentiment you’ll hear come alive in vibrant, twirling chords all throughout the album. With Matt Rogers from Vancouver-based blues duo The Harpoonist & The Axe Murderer lending technical and creative prowess as Tingle & Spark’s co-producer, T. Nile was able to pursue her “strong vision” for the record while leaving her ego in the dust.

“I believe that art is channeling,” she explains. “You tap into this universal realm of creativity and some kind of magic happens I don’t overly identify with my creations. I channel them, but it doesn’t feel like it’s all me.”

*JULY 12th, ~ DOUBLE HELIX ~ http://www.sonicbids.com/DoubleHelix  We play an intriguing and stimulating instrumental style that includes originals as well as jazz, Latin, and blues standards. In July 2010, we were invited to play at the Vancouver International Jazz Festival who described us this way:
"Guitarist brothers Tony and Peter  Chotem play lush original jazz. With tantalizing hints of rock, folk, Latin, and blues, their mix of acoustic and electric guitars is cool and inviting.”
We were also proud to be nominated in the ‘Best Jazz’ category at the 2010 Barrie New Music Festival in Barrie Ontario.
Tony and Peter Chotem grew up surrounded by music and artists of various kinds. Their father, Neil Chotem, was one of Montreal's busiest musicians. He composed, arranged and played for Quebec's biggest stars including Quebec's most succcessful rock band: Harmonium. From their father, they learned the value of originality and the need to develop both as composers and as players. Their jazz sets stand out due to the large percentage of originals that are included. Another important lesson they learned from their father was the value of versatility and that there are no real boundaries in music. They are equally happy improvising to an ancient Celtic melody as to a 20th century blues standard. Last but not least, they learned the value of good arranging. Even familiar standards sparkle with fresh ideas and unexpected arrangements.

Schogen is actually a veteran blues man, having recorded several CDs since the mid-1990s with his own band. The music is that sort of good-timing blues which gets the toes tapping. The music has the sad side of life lyrics, but the music suggests tossing the negativity and having some fun.

Dave packed his bags and headed West where he joined a punk band as a bass player and began his musical journey. When that didn’t pan out he decided to form his own alternative rock band and moved to Winnipeg.

Harold Arnold), the band’s hard-edged, high-voltage, in-your-face  approach–which they dubbed “Neo-Yardbirdism”–immediately distinguished them from their more conservative counterparts in the Vancouver R&B scene. Throughout the years they have forged a distinctive style, playing the blues their way: uncompromisingly unconventionally, no apologies for liberties taken. The Mud Bay Blues Band, featuring “Legend In His Spare Time” Mud Bay Slim (“King of the Mud Bay Delta Blues”) and his long time cohorts, Murphy Farrell (drums), Mark Branscombe (guitar), Randall T. Carpenter (guitar, steel guitar, mandolin) and Bob “Beaudine” Petterson (bass), do it their own way. Always have, always will.

*MAY  3rd, SAT ~ SAM WEBER ~ http://webermusic.bandcamp.com/ Hailing from the open skies and minds of Victoria, BC, 20-year-old Canadian singer-songwriter and guitarist Sam Weber has gone from strength to strength with gigs and EP releases that have caught the imagination of listeners and media across the world.

Co-founded by Aaron Ross and supported by The Boom Booms, The Music Tree is committed to “greening” the planet by inspiring people to get involved in community building and self-sustainability.

FEB 14th, FRI, VALENTINES DAY ~ ASH Grunwald ~
http://www.ashgrunwald.com/

Ash Grunwald is an Australian blues musician. He has built a strong reputation in Australia and internationally based on his live shows and festival performances.

“…funky, heavy, rootsy soul beats, and that’s not even mentioning Ash Grunwald’s rustic soul voice.”
- Sunday Telegraph

Like a lot of blues and roots musicians, he's something of a young hippie, and many of his songs deal with subjects like escaping from the big city and spending time with nature. He even has a song thanking a pod of dolphins for saving him from a shark while he was out surfing.

Blistering live sets on the festival circuit throughout Australia, Japan, Canada, America, Europe and the UK, have had critics and fans raving about his unique blend of roots, blues, beats and a whole lotta groove for now, more than a decade. Nominated five times for Australia’s ARIA Awards, and a swag of award wins including MBAS Blues Performer of the Year 2003 and the AIR Best Independent Blues and Roots Album, and in 2009, taking out a prestigious APRA songwriting award for Blues & Roots Song of the Year.

“It is almost impossible not to be transported into Ash’s world, where the relationship between a grinding guitar and a stony, rock-strewn voice is all that is needed to convey absolute exhilaration.”
- Jmag

"Ash Grunwald is one of the best."
- Australian Guitar Magazine

"Grunwald's playing is impressive and he rarely lets a good groove go to waste"
- Herald Sun
