Winter has arrived and looking foreward to some SKIING and MUSIC!

2012

*MAY 4th & 5th, FRI & SAT ~ THE DAN ENGELLAND BLUES BAND ~ Red Hot guitar licks with a Kick Ass Band! Check out these videos shot at Lorenzo's!!!
 http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=endscreen&NR=1&v=BC9gnX550yQ
 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SVapP5UVxTk

*MAY 11th, FRI ~ THE F-HOLES ~ http://www.thefholes.ca/  Over the past few years, the band — named after the holes in instruments, such as hollow-bodied guitars and violins — has earned a reputation around town as a can’t-miss live act that transcends a simple genre description thanks to a mixture of ragtime, Dixieland jazz, rock and roots that offers a little something for everybody. The old-timey sound firmly is rooted in music from the past but has a contemporary edge that helps the band appeal to a wide demographic.
There was never a plan about how the band of 20-somethings would ultimately sound; it worked itself out through years of playing together. The band’s stage show and ability to get crowds moving comes after weekly residencies at different bars in the city where they got the chance to work on their live set, tackling everything from classic rock to country to blues standards.

*MAY  12th, SAT ~ PRAM ~ http://www.pramtrio.com  Formed in late 2009, Pram Trio is a Toronto-based ensemble comprised of three young musicians from across Canada. This group combines elements of the traditional jazz piano trio with contemporary styles of music both within and beyond the jazz genre. Pram Trio performs music applicable to listeners both familiar and unfamiliar with jazz.

*MAY 15th, TUES ~ CARLOS DEL JUNCO ~ http://www.carlosdeljunco.com
http://rickfines.ca/     Featuring Carlos del Junco, multi award winning Blues & Jazz harmonica player and Rick Fines, one of Canada’s finest blues/folk singer songwriters.
To say Carlos plays the harmonica is like saying "Jimi Hendrix plays guitar". He blows the blues harp through a prism -- suddenly it seems he's holding every color in the musical rainbow right there in his hands.

*MAY 18th & 19th,  FRI & SAT ~ THE MUD BAY BLUES BAND ~ http://www.mudbayblues.com/
For 29 years (and counting) the Mud Bay Blues Band has been electrifying audiences with their eclectic brand of Rhythm and Blues.
Surviving more than their share of trials and tribulations along the way, they continue to live up to their well-earned reputation as “The Band That Won’t Go Away”--much to the delight of their legions of devoted fans.

This ain’t your average blues band.

Founded in the badlands of South Surrey in 1978 by lead singer / blues harp whiz Mud Bay Slim (a.k.a. Harold Arnold), the band’s hard-edged, high-voltage approach immediately distinguished them from their decidedly mellower counterparts in the Vancouver R&B scene. And throughout the years they have steadfastly maintained their distinctive style, playing the blues their way: unconventionally, uncompromisingly and unapologetically.

*MAY 25th & 26th, FRI & SAT ~ THE LES COPELAND BLUES BAND ~
http://www.earwigmusic.com/les-copeland/ One of British Columbia’s finest blues artists, Les Copeland has always played guitar.
Primarily self-taught, his unique sound has developed out of a rich mixture of influences including blues, jazz, Spanish flamenco, pop and classical music.

From down home Delta to uptown Chicago blues, Les can improvise anything. He started his career as a country blues guy with a bottleneck stuck on one finger. By adding material by jazz guitarist, Wes Montgomery and Chuck Berry to his repertoire, he developed great versatility and chops that would have sent his idol, Robert Johnson, back to the crossroads for another meeting with the devil. Disguising his age so that he could play in Vancouver Island clubs, Les was a professional by the time he was fifteen. Almost immediately, he stepped into a leadership role by fronting the Les Copeland Band, followed by Les Copeland and the Red Hot Ramblers. Both of Les’ groups rocked many a tavern in the region, and played at most of the major blues and folk festivals in the Pacific Northwest.

*JUNE 8th, FRI ~ THREE WORLDS ~ http://www.manzanitaproductions.com

Vancouver Island roots music supergroup THREE WORLDS is comprised of
award-winning guitarist Brad Prevedoros, acclaimed multi-instrumentalist Greg Joy and percussion master Niel Golden.
Their collectively created debut album was released in the fall of 2011 and features the trio’s own interpretive blend of eastern, latin jazz, blues, african, pan-asian, and celtic folk influences.
“We were transported to another time and place…from the shores of Ireland,
through England to the South to Spain and East to India it was a two hour
musical journey steeped in tradition and rich in discoveries”
Nicole Lalonde, Goldstream News
Collectively Three Worlds has over 100 years of performing experience, produced over
twenty-five albums with a million copies sold worldwide and has earned a number of
Juno and Western Canadian Music Award nominations.
Percussionist Niel Golden specializes on the tabla (Indian hand drums) and is known
for his masterful interpretation of Indian classical music, blues and other world music
styles. Niel also performs and composes on the new and elusive Hang (pronounced
Hung), a flying saucer-esque instrument from Switzerland invented in the year 2000.
Greg Joy brings a fusion of Celtic, Baroque, and folk-rock to the mix through his
mastery of the hammered dulcimer, flute and guitar. Guitarist Brad Prevedoros,
renowned for his instrumental virtuosity and exuberant live performances, brings the
Latin, jazz and flamenco element to this shared musical adventure that is grounded in
many traditions and yet, brand new.
“The audience was delighted and rapt throughout the performance. It was so
musical you could feel your ears

*JUNE 15th & 16th, FRI & SAT ~ THE DIXIE ALLSTARS ~ We started out as a five piece, with Jim Johnston splitting his electronic keyboard to enable him to play bass with his left hand and "comp with his right.  When we met Ariane Charon, we quickly realized she had a good ear and was motivated to learn the dixie style.  She was already steeped in the Cuban rhythms and had developed technically good 'chops.  A fast learner, Ariane joined our Dixie Allstars and after a few weeks, started gigging with us.
So now we had a six piece group:  Terry Kosowick on trumpet, Gord Waters on trombone, me Sandy Cameron, on clarinet, Jim Johnston on keys and Doug Grant on drums.  About the same time, I found out there was a new guy in town who played the banjo!  OK!  John Hansen and his banjo joined up.  Now we are seven.  John has years of experience in this style of jazz and is a good singer.  We now have two members in the band who sing... Doug and John.  Vocals add a whole lot to our presentation.  We're learning new "old" songs to add to our repertory.  Jim and John have come up with some nice arrangements to enhance our renditions.  Our last Gallery Jazz concert was an overwhelming success.  One audience member commented, "I was so wrapped up with your music, at the end of the concert I was drained of all my energy.  I went home thoroughly spent."  We hope we won't tire anyone else out!  Our aim is to bring happy energy to our listeners.  We like dancers who can move to our up-beat songs.  We'll play a few slow, bluesy tunes to calm things down, once in while.  We've been together as "The Dixie Allstars" for one year.    Sandy

At 23 years of age, Alexander Flock is already an accomplished
guitarist and composer. He first picked up the instrument at 11 when
he began studying under Okanagan guitarist Neil Fraser.
At 15 he was
the Canadian winner of the Larrivee Guitar Competition and has
continued to receive many accolades for his playing.

Everybody from Stevie Ray Vaughan to Wes Montgomery to Chet Atkins can
be heard in his playing, but when you roll all these influences into
one you get a sound that is distinctly his own. Lately he has been
honing his fingerstyle guitar playing both in solo and duo settings
with fiddle player Trent Freeman. With a repertoire that covers
everything from country fingerpicking to instrumental arrangements of
pop songs music lovers from all walks of life will enjoy his high
energy acoustic show.

Trent Freeman is an emerging Toronto based violin player,
whose unique blend of
deep groove, in depth harmony, captivating melodies and personal
writing style set him
apart from many others. His versatility makes him a sought after
session musician and

The Modern Grass was born in early 2011 and is already kicking up dust in the Canadian music scene with a successful Canadian tour and a debut album nominated for Music Nova Scotias' Best Country/Bluegrass album of the year.
The MG is acoustically inspired jazz, bluegrass, gypsy, blues, classical and folk music. The Quintet pays tribute to a number of musical traditions, but leaves plenty of room for innovation and improvisation. Complex arrangements translate seamlessly, and Terrell's down home songs and lyrics are a sharp and comforting contrast to the tasteful, yet avante garde musicianship. The Modern Grass is a breath of fresh air.

"The Modern Grass" features violinist extraordinaire Donald Maclennan, (TZE, Mishras Dream, Ben Caplan and the Casual Smokers) hard driving Double bass player Adam Pye ( Laura Merrimen, The moonshine Ramblers, The Bluejam Grass Band), Halifax premier resonator guitar player, Andrew Sneddon (Laura Merrimen, The moonshine Ramblers, The Bluejam Grass Band), the fastest banjo picker this side of the Mississippi, Dan MacCormack, and Tom Terrell. *AUG 9th, THURS ~ COMEDY SHOW with PAUL MYREHAUG & FRIENDS ~ http://paulmyrehaug.com/

*AUG 10th & 11th, FRI & SAT ~ GADJOLOGY ~  You can’t find the word Gadjology in the dictionary…and it’s just as well.   A self given name for the B.C. quartet made up of Bill Lockie, Jacob Verburg , Richard Owings and Willy Gaw, Gadjology is more of a phenomenon to be experienced than a word to be described.

For one thing it’s hard to witness Gadjology without falling in love with the music they play. And what the band plays so passionately well is gypsy jazz. The style originates from the 1930’s and 1940’s and is attributed to the legendary Belgian manouche (meaning "gypsy" in French) guitarist and composer Django Reinhardt. Derived by combining a dark gypsy flavor with the contemporary swing jazz music of the period, the style went into relative obscurity in the decades after the 50’s but has been enjoying a lively resurgence beginning in the 1970’s in Europe and following suit in North America a decade or so later. The movement continues to grow steadily stronger and more popular to date.  When taken apart the music may be complex and mind bending but watching Gadjology you wouldn’t know it.  The band members play with such precision and seeming ease that while you’re infused with adrenaline and heightened heart beat while listening, you’ll also find yourself strangely lulled into a hypnotic state by the sheer wizardry of the musicianship at work.

*SAT ~ OCT 13th ~ STEVE DAWSON ~An Evening with Steve Dawson ...
http://stevedawson.ca  Over the past decade or so Steve Dawson has become such an indelible fixture on the Canadian musical landscape that it’s tempting to take him for granted.  One of the drawbacks of being so talented is that Dawson makes everything he does sound so effortless.  The music that continually flows out of him is so natural and unforced that it’s possible to forget all of the toil that went into producing it. Behind the organic, flowing guitar work, the crisp arrangements and the laconic singing voice, resides one of the brightest, hardest working musicians the country has ever produced.
Steve Dawson will take to the stage on a short mid-October tour through BC & Alberta - we hope you join in!  Steve will perform as duo with bass accompaniment: simple and totally engaging!

Charlie Musselwhite stated that "JW Jones is one of the best guitar players I’ve heard in a long time. He and his band do great tunes with cool arrangements and I love listening to them. They play with taste and fire at the same time." Guitarist Little Charlie Baty has stated that "JW is one of the young guns in the blues guitar world who consistently delivers the goods on record and on stage - and of course I'm gonna dig anybody who writes a tune called 'Batyology'!"

"Never fails to electrify the crowd!" - Mark Monahan, Ottawa Bluesfest

"As people were leaving the theatre at the end of the show, many could be heard

*SAT, OCT 20th ~ STUCK ON HONEY ~ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q_lfEzcHfAI
with Opening Band ~
*SEAL SKULL HAMMER ~ 'Stuck On Honey is a new trio emerging from Revelstoke, BC consisting of Maggie Davis, Denis Severino and Jacob Verburg.  Since the winter the group has been bringing a diverse repertoire of folk music to audiences across the BC interior.  Drawing from a broad landscape of singer/songwriters and old-time Americana, the group strives to keep folk music and its traditions alive, while leaving their own mark as ambassadors.

As a multi-style guitarist virtuoso, Jacob Verburg brings to the group his vast experience and well-rounded musicality.  Jacob plays regularly in the Salmon Arm area and belongs to an array of groups, bands and projects, from jazz to blues to country.  As a folk music aficionado, organizer of The Revelstoke Coffee House, and host of Revelstoke Folk Music Radio, Denis Severino's comfort as a lead with his depth of repertoire and uptake of the claw-hammer style banjo make his partnership with co-lead vocalist Maggie Davis a comfortable fit.  Maggie's natural talent as a singer is evident with her every breath.  Her deep and powerful voice and ranging harmonies compliment the group's acoustic presentation.  The trio are stuck together known as Stuck On Honey.
Will be touring as a quartet. The song list is a mix of
old time banjo music, bluegrass, folk  and acoustic blues.

"Seal Skull Hammer is a band that was born on a porch in the sunny Shuswap. Named for the idea of using archaic tools to build what we need, the band prides itself on having the lowest-tech gear possible to make their music, shunning modern technology and advancement wherever possible.

The boys aim to bring music back to a simpler time; a time when people talked face to face, danced with each other, and valued a sense of community above material possessions. They hope to entertain you, laugh with you, and send you home feeling better than when you arrived. $10 cover

Ross Neilsen is the real, old school kind of artist. Write. Tour. Record. Tour. Repeat.  Cover $10

From Furry Lewis and Henry Townsend to Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, Albert Collins, Taj Mahal, Robery Cray and so many others, Jim has been on the blues highway for 40 years. $25 cover

*SAT, NOV 24th ~ Doc MacLEAN ~  http://bluesemergency.blogspot.ca/   ~
Doc MacLean. A blues vagabond writing from the dark side of the blues highway.
He’s spent the last forty years exploring the road atlas from A to Z— surfacing sometimes on big stages in fancy halls, sometimes streetside trolling for change and a meal. No managers, agents, record companies. No fancy new guitars. He’s a traveller, a collector and teller of songs and stories— a songster in the blues tradition. Blues Revue magazine has called him “the Prince of Darkness.”

Over two hundred shows a year across Canada in a battered Lincoln. A working man’s 1929 National and a pocket full of harmonicas. Doc MacLean’s 7th Annual National Steel Blues Tour continues to deliver real music to real people in real places.
$10 cover
