Hailing from Vancouver, B.C., Kastle, a self-proclaimed piano-junkie, described her music as a “hybrid between my jazz background and my pop, groove, and funk influences. Kastle has been honing her skills as a performer since she was 13, starting out in bands and finally dropping her first album when she was just 18.
www.christacouture.com
”after seeing her live once, you'll want to see her again.”- Chartattack “Her voice, to us men, is like what catnip is to cats.”-The Bob & AJ show

Singer/songwriter/acoustic guitarist Christa Couture will be a new name to most, but could be the next Canuck to enjoy the success of Sarah Harmer or Kathleen Edwards. Christa's material creates a consistent, bewitching mood with the closely-mic'ed, whispery delivery of Jewel and the lyrical meter of Tori Amos. She's also compared to Ani Difranco because she sings about relationships and kissing girls (and that's hot in a toasty warm acoustic kind of way). The production of this debut full-length release oozes Canadiana (read the atmospherics of a Daniel Lanois job) and will surely connect with fans of such intimate acoustic/post-folk music.- Chris Twomey, Tandem Toronto

With the guidance of such luminaries as Tim Williams, Ronnie Hayward, John Rutherford, Bill Zulak, Charlie Hase, among others, Billy went into the studio to record. His self titled debut album is what he describes as "an honest and hopeful reflection of the human condition, experienced by a musician who has travelled the world embracing different cultures and music."

JUNE 6th, FRI,   ~ THE HARPOONIST &  THE AXE MURDERER ~ www.myspace.com/harpoonistaxemurderer

*** Shawn 'the harpoonist ' Hall - Vocals, Harp, Guitar *** Matt 'the axe murderer' Rogers - Guitar, Slide, Foot Percussion, Vocals

HAM is a finger-pickin’, foot-stompin’, harp-blowin’ roots blues duo out of Vancouver. Drawing influences from the old masters and innovators like John Hurt, Muddy Waters, and Robert Johnson, their music tells rich tales of midnight trains, black cat bones, highwaymen and a time when song was a simple expression of the soul. Shawn Hall (aka ‘the harpoonist’) grew up in Toronto, immersing himself in the local blues scene and eventually forming the band ‘Tied to the Tracks’. Matt Rogers (aka ‘the axe murderer’) grew up coping licks from his father’s collection of BB King records. Both have since become renowned producers working with Mark Berube, Ben Rogers, Dirty Bottom, Gordie Johnson, CR Avery and the VSO. Together, they have returned to their roots, and the roots of the music that surrounds us everyday.

JUNE 7th, SAT,   ~ THE MALARKEYS ~ www.themalarkeys.com The Malarkeys are a four-piece Celtic rock band from Kelowna, B.C.. Serving up a mixture of old and new, this tightly knit unit of experienced musicians deliver a lively and entertaining show. Their unique arrangements create Celtic mash-ups that get audiences out of their seats and onto the dance floor.

Ryan Campbell plays drums and bodhran, and adds creative graphics and experience in audio technology--not to mention a wicked sense of humour--to the mix. Lisa Grekul plays keyboards and sings lead and harmony vocals, adding some class on top of her talent to the whole affair. Karl Hourigan plays electric and acoustic guitar and penny whistle, and sings lead and harmony vocals. Karl was born in Ireland, so he brings an authentic Celtic musical flavour to the music. Gail Hourigan plays bass, sings lead vocals, and lends her voice to the Malarkeys’ three-part harmonies; she can’t wait for their next show.

All the band members have years of experience performing, writing, and arranging music. Their combined backgrounds have travelled through delta blues to Scottish ballads, with a detour or two through British pop and Canadian rock.

JUNE 12th, THUR,   ~ HEADWATER ~ www.headwater.ca  ~ Headwater started plowing new ground in folk and country roots music in the fall of 2005 when emerging songwriters and vocalists Jonas Shandel and Matt Bryant (son of longtime Chilliwack bass player Ab Bryant) recruited some of Vancouver's hottest young jazz players to work on their debut album My Old Friend.

JUNE 13th, FRI,   ~ THE PERPETRATORS ~ www.perps.ca

"The Perpetrators have made the blues tent in Canada bigger."
- Shelagh Rogers,  host of CBC's Sounds Like Canada

Once a not-so-well-kept secret in their hometown of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada - where they acted as house band for visiting blues legends Hubert Sumlin, Louisiana Red, Paul "Wine" Jones and others - The Perpetrators kicked things up a notch in 2006. A European tour capped off a Juno nomination and a win at the Western Canadian Music Awards. 2007 saw the band continue to expand and grow with the release their third album, "Tow Truck" - an uncompromising expression of their varied musical influences that never loses sight of their blues roots - followed by the recording of a soon-to-be-released live album and a very successful second European tour which including the recording of live radio specials in Germany and Belgium.

"Blues for people who hate blues," they distill rock 'n' roll, punk and country into their heady houserockin' punch. Give them a stage, any stage and they'll put on the best show they can for whoever's there. Each one is a seasoned pro on their instrument of choice but, never afraid to take chances, the boys are fond of switching it up in an onstage game of musical chairs. To quote a much used and abused cliche, The Perpetrators have to be seen to be believed.

J "Howik" Nowicki - guitar, vocals & sometimes drums

Ryan "ODL" Menard - bass, vocals & sometimes guitar

JUNE 20th, THUR,   ~ HEATHER BLUSH TRIO ~ www.haetherblush.com

Heather Blushessongwriting and vocals are most often compared to Norah Jones, Joni Mitchell, and Maria Muldaur, but her style is truly unique.  Her songs are difficult to categorize, but are most often described as jazz, folk, and R&B-influenced. With song subjects ranging from baseball to synesthesia, listeners are left guessing what will come out of her mouth next.   Her eclectic style is not surprising when you consider her background as a classically-trained pianist, folk guitarist, and jazz vocalist.
Heather's debut CD, first blush, released in March 2005, was recorded with Juno award-winning producer Dan Donahue (Valdy, Connie Kaldor) of Winnipeg.   It has been receiving radio play on CBC, as well as independent and university radio stations across Canada, and as far away as Portugal, Spain, and Serbia.Heather is quickly becoming a sought after entertainer for festivals and concerts of all varieties.   If you have not heard of her yet, you will very soon!

Embodying the sound the West Coast, Buena Buya (pronounced, /boo-yah/, and Spanish for "Good Noise") has been gaining momentum since their creation in the fall of 2006 and are poised to take their music further by continually reinventing and redefining their sound. Unbounded by any particular musical genre and bringing diverse influences from the six members of the band, Buena Buya's tone draws on several elements to keep the crowd on its feet and moving. With a three-piece percussion section pumping out Latin rhythms mixed with the lively sounds of Ska, Funk, Jazz, Reggae, R&B, and Surf it is very rare that the audience can stay put.
Buena Buya has been fortunate enough to play music that suits both their personal tastes, and the attitudes of those who frequent their shows. The Buya's comprehensive sound entices audiences from all musical niches, and is a true pleasure to the senses.  When these six friends join in musical sodality, the experience hits you like a wave and the profusion of rhythm and melody lifts you from your seat.

JULY 3rd, THUR,   ~ KENT McALLISTER ~

Memory Replacer is perfect for lazy afternoons. It blends into the background of whatever you are doing, but it is in no way forgettable. McAllister has a voice that is gravely smooth, and very pleasant to listen to. All of the songs on this album seem effortless and natural. Singing seems to come as easily as breathing to McAllister.

I was a little nervous that this would be a purebred country album, complete with twangy voices and songs about horses. Considering my tolerance of country rarely extends past Shania Twain, I did not expect to like this album. Fortunately, my lower expectations made the fact that not only is this album not red-necked country, it is also very enjoyable. I am not the only one who was gently wooed by this album. My younger brother, who generally only likes bands who sing about sex, drugs, and rock and roll, declared this album is “not bad.” Considering this album does not have much in the area of sex, drugs, or rock and roll, this is quite a compliment.

The great thing about this album is that it is really easy for anybody to enjoy it, regardless of what their typical musical tastes may be. If you are looking for a mellow listen tinged with mild country flair, then definitely consider picking up Memory Replacer.

JULY 4th & 5th, FRI & SAT,   ~ THE CRUZEROS ~ www.cruzeros.com "Scandalosa is most complete album in the Cruzeros trilogy of disc's to date...and that would be saying something considering that their El Niño album, released in 2000, yielded some seven charted singles"

Award winning Country fusion ~ The Cruzeros won Group of the Year and Album of the Year at the BC Country Music Awards.

SUN and every Sun from now on!, Hosted by Dan Engelland & his Band ( of The HOO DOOs) A  new jam session. All musicians and music lovers remember....every Sunday about 6:00 at Lorenzo's Cafe, come on down to jam and enjoy!

JULY 10th, THUR,   ~ THE WYRD SISTERS ~ www.wyrdsisters.com Summer ‘08 BC Tour

Winnipeg’s The Wyrd Sisters, aptly named ‘Canada's First Ladies of Folk’ by international music critics, are returning to BC this July by popular demand!Formed by Kim Baryluk in 1989 as an informal gathering of friends to share songs and stories, The Wyrd Sisters quickly became festival and folk hall favorites. Intricately arranged harmonies with moving and inspiring lyrics covering topics from the physical, to the political, to the spiritual yielded their signature trademark sound. This in turn became the benchmark in molding a new generation of singer-songwriters. ‘Folk Music' as a genre, could be seen as a misnomer for the group. Carried by the rich, deep alto of Baryluk, the music itself has flavours of everything from jazz, blues and rock to traditional. "It's about the lyrics," Baryluk says. "The music is simply a vehicle for the message. People want to see and hear their own truths reflected back at them, not the distortion that is often marketed by the multi-billion dollar giants that own the media. We're happy to bring them their own stories, and we like to do it in such a way that there is some hope and inspiration at the end of it all.."

The sound of a live performance itself may be additionally coloured by the guest musicians that the Wyrd Sisters are known for inviting to perform with them. The Wyrd Sisters have taken their particular brand of 'gospel' across the continent, from CBGB's in New York to the Inuvik Folk Festival in the north, to the Kerrville Folk Festival in Texas. Their music has been performed by numerous groups and acts, and they have received TV and radio play across the globe. Among their contributions are several videos, music for films and movies, various compilation inclusions and five recordings, three of which have received Juno nominations for best group album.

JULY 11th, FRI,   ~ FLORA WARE ~ www.floramusic.com

Flora puts her soul into singing. Not fitting neatly into any one genre, she is part jazz diva, part folk singer, part cabaret performer. Whether it's swing standards, R&B, or opera, she isn't afraid to push the boundaries, delivering a comedic or seductive twist to a song.

A talented triple-threat, Flora has trained in acting, dance, classical singing and studied jazz voice with Kate Hammett-Vaughan while completing her music diploma in Vancouver. She has a compelling stage presence and an agile, emotive voice that wins her new fans wherever she performs.

Described as both a "little-known vocal treasure" and "one of the rising jazz talents" in BC, Flora is ready to step into a bigger spotlight. Her new CD "Insight" will be released by summer 2008, with a busy year of performances to follow! Working with co-producers Rick Kilburn and Peter Berring, "Insight" promises to appeal to a wide audience with its groovy mix of standards and original music influenced by Latin jazz, and Soul/R&B.

JULY 12th, SAT,   ~ THE GLENDA RAE JAZZ TRIO ~ www.glendaraemusic.com

Glenda Rae’s vocal prowess has alternately stunned and delighted audiences in Vancouver, New York, and Los Angeles. In combination with a weighty catalog of songs largely co-composed with West Coast musical phenomena Miles Black, Glenda takes expectant audiences on layered musical journeys, exploring contemporary music infused with classic jazz, soul, rhythm and blues, and gospel influences, as well as inventive improvisational forays. Gifted with an agile four octave range, yet centred as an alto, Glenda’s voice has been favourably compared to artists like Anita Baker, Oleta Adams, and Annie Lennox. This remarkable facility is blended with a rare musical sensitivity that serves the song first, and brings life and depth to the lyrical narrative.
